Farmer’s Market in the spring

For four weeks in a row we’ve eaten asparagus.
For three weeks in a row we’ve eaten strawberries
For two weeks in a row we’ve eaten sugar peas.

Life could be worse.

Although Joe is already sick of asparagus fritatta. Did you know in Thai, asparagus is called nor-mai farang which means “foreign bamboo” ? In Cantonese tomatoes are known as “foreign eggplant.”

The other thing I like about shopping at farmer’s markets is that I can bring back the packaging for vendors to re-use, and keep them out of the landfill. Asparagus rubberbands. 10 lb netted bags for oranges. Green plastic strawberry baskets. Egg cartons. Glass bottles for honey. Even the general plastic bags or produce bags: we bring our own and keep reusing them, which keeps the plastic bag population in our kitchen under control. And of course everything is carried in the canvas shopping bags we’ve acquired through garage sales or gleaning.
