The Mercury News has been running quite a few articles recently on Asian donor registry programs, to encourage more folks to register as potential bone marrow donors. The greater the number of samples in the Asian American Donor Program registry, the better the chances will be for leukemia patients to find a potential match for bone marrow transplants to help them get well. And in many cases, leukemia patients are more likely to find a compatible match from someone who is of the same ethnicity, if no one in their family is a match.
Donating samples for the registry simply requires providing two tablespoons worth of blood. If you’re not already registered, I’d encourage you to do so. Just imagine, you could be a match and potentially save someone’s life, just by virtue of the unique human leukocyte antigens in your body
